2014 HSTW Career & Technical Center Improvement Award

Columbiana County Career & Technical Center Receives the

2014 HSTW Career & Technical Center Improvement Award

Columbiana County Career & Technical Center (CCCTC) has received the 2014 High Schools That Work (HSTW) Career & Technical Center Improvement Award for progress of local school leaders and teachers in improving school practices and raising student achievement. The award is presented by the Board of Trustees of HSTW Ohio Network, a not-for-profit organization that supports HSTW and Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) in northeast Ohio and statewide. HSTW and MMGW are the nation’s first whole school improvement initiatives for middle and high school.

This achievement is based upon the performance of the school on the 2014 HSTW Assessment, Teacher Surveys and Student Surveys administered to students and teachers every two years from HSTW member sites in 31 states. Using a data-driven approach, the HSTW school improvement initiative creates a culture of high expectations and prepares middle grades students for challenging high school courses and high school students for success in postsecondary education and careers.

CCCTC is the only career technical center site of the HSTW NE Ohio Region network to receive this award. This designation is given to schools that deeply implement the HSTW school improvement design and meet the award criteria:

· 60 percent of students met one or more readiness goals
· 60 percent of students completed one or more parts of the recommended curriculum
· 75 percent of students experienced an intensive emphasis on quality CT studies
· Met/exceeded the mean percentages of High Scoring Sites nationally on 5 of 10 intensive emphasis indicators
· 50 percent of CT students experienced an intensive emphasis for integrating academic content into CT courses and quality CT studies·

This accomplishment was based upon the performance of 47 CCCTC seniors who were randomly selected to participate in the 2014 HSTW Assessment and Student Surveys compared to 26,064 seniors from 500 high schools in 31 states. HSTW Student Survey results showed an increase in the percentage of students who are college ready in reading, mathematics and science.

Based upon the 2014 HSTW Teacher Survey results, 22 CCCTC teacher responses on using assessment techniques to improve learning exceeded the mean percentage of high scoring sites nationally. The Teacher Survey was administered to 18,668 teachers from 500 schools in 31 states including 4,580 teachers in Ohio.

Diana Rogers, Executive Director, praised the school for its achievement, noting the crucial role of the high school in preparing more students for success in college and careers. Karen Johnson presented the award before the CCCTC faculty and staff on Tuesday, February 10th, 2015.

“This school has shown what can be accomplished to raise student achievement by implementing the HSTW design for strengthening curriculum and instruction,” said Jeremy Corbisello, CCCTC assistant superintendent/director. “The school illustrates the spirit of change and the gains in performance the HSTW design advocates to get students ready for challenging academics and career/technical courses in high school and prepared for postsecondary education and careers.”

Karen Johnson, HSTW regional coach, praised the school for improving in 11 of the 12 indicators. She was most notably impressed that in 2 categories, academic and career technical, CCCTC exceeded the national average in growth. In her opinion, these are the two most important categories in which schools could excel.

More than 1,200 high schools in 30 states and the District of Columbia participate in the HSTW school improvement initiative, and 350 middle grades schools in 19 states participate in the MMGW school improvement initiative. In Ohio, 134 HSTW and 102 MMGW sites participate in HSTW and MMGW. Ohio joined the national HSTW network in 1998 as the 22nd state and the MMGW network in 2002 as the 15th state.

The HSTW initiative is the nation's first large-scale effort to engage state, district and school leaders in partnership with teachers, students, parents and the community to equip all students with the knowledge and skills needed to graduate from high school and succeed in college and the workplace. HSTW is the largest program of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). MMGW school improvement design, the nation's first large-scale effort to engage state, district in school leaders in partnerships with teachers, students, parents and the community to raise student achievement in the middle grades.

HSTW Ohio Network, a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization, is dedicated to supporting HSTW and MMGW in northeast Ohio and statewide.
